מכתב מהנזיר שון הנמצא בקטמנדו

Dear Tipi and other friends in Israel,
I hope this find you all well.
Things are much better than a few days ago. To be honest Boudha was hardly affected by the quake. I believe at Tingcholi an old house collapsed killing 2 and on the road to Kopan a 7-story house (indeed, why build such a size!) fell down. The owners of this house were at Shechen at the time….
No one was hurt here. The main temple has slight structural damage and it is being looked at by a team of engineers. I heard the White Gompa also suffered some structural damage as well. No casualties though.
At Shechen we have been caring for the local communities. The monks did a wonderful job in caring for the community; making sure all had shelter, food, hot drinks and water.
Many are still camped outside our gompa and will be allowed to remain for a few more days.
The ones are now taking drinking water and food to the worst hit areas. White Gompa monks are doing the same.
Much of the news reports focus on Bhaktaput and regions outside of the valley. There you find a lot of distress.
I went to Swayambu the other day and the level of destruction there is immense. The stupa remains fine but all the building there around have been damaged. The 2 kagyud gompas are destroyed. Alongside the the roads and pathways many buildings have been ruined and all that remains is their demolition.
Benchen Gompa (Where Nyempa Rinpoche gave the Damngak Dzo) remains but with structural damage. All the monks and our friends thereabouts are fine.
In the city I drove past large camps. There was a visible water shortage and lack of sanitation. People are getting restless and resentful toward the government which they perceive as not doing enough. The Govt., by its own admission, is overwhelmed. Aid is coming in continually, we hear large cargo plains arriving every hour or so, but distribution is slow. Obviously the priority are the destroyed villages, and areas closest to the epicentre, but that doesn't stop the locals feeling abandoned.
Rescue and tidy up, etc., has also been greatly hampered by the rain. It rains daily for a little while and then the clouds clear and it is very hot. Some are saying the monsoon has come early, but the rains come from the north and are icy cold. Not the warm rains carried over the Indian plains.
Bus services resumed yesterday and with a local history about disease many have fled.
I plan to stay for another week and then leave for UK on the ticket I have.
All the very best to you all.
  Love,
Sean
