The place of philosophical study in the Buddhist practice

Date: 10th March, 2019
Teacher: His Holiness the 42nd Sakya Trizin, Ratna Vajra Rinpoche
Location: Jerusalem, The Hebrew University
Buddhism does a vast usage of analyzing mental states and the reality in order to attempt in creating a meaningful transformation of the mind. In this way, Buddhism has diverse demanding methods that have clear intellectual or scholastic aspects, while at the same time, these are intended to motivate significant personal processes that leave a dramatic effect on the student.
Buddhist practice is composed of three stages: study of a specific subject, contemplation of the studied material and meditation on it. With these stages the practitioner achieves a mind transforming experience. Ideally, the study should be implemented in meditation to create its best effect. However, the spreading of Buddhism to the western world influenced the Buddhist traditional way of practice. Hence, the need for clarification and understanding of the meaning and significance of each one of these stages is unavoidable.
In his lecture, His Holiness Sakya Trizin will discuss these matters and others, which are related to the place of study in the transformative process that Buddhism, in particular Tibetan Buddhism, aims to create.

The event will take place with the collaboration of the Department of Asian Studies in the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.
Gathering: 16:00
Beginning time: 16:30
