טוקדאם, המסע לחיים הבאים – גישה אלטרנטיבית למוות

רובנו מפחדים מהמוות, חוששים מהלא-נודע. המוות נתפס בעינינו כסוף המוחלט של החיים שלנו.
אך, על-פי הבודהיזם אין זה כך כלל. הבודהיזם טוען לקיום של אינספור תקופות חיים. הגענו לחיים האלה מחיים קודמים, ואחרי החיים האלה נמשיך לתקופת חיינו הבאה. המוות הקליני, כפי שאנחנו מכירים, אינו הפרידה הסופית מהחיים, אלא הוא אחד השלבים בלבד בתהליך המוות.
הנחה זו מובילה את המתרגלים הבודהיסטיים להבנה שעליהם להתכונן לקראת המוות ולמה שנמצא מעבר לו. הכנה כזו תיתן בידיהם כלים לשפר את המצב אליו ייוולדו, ואף לקדם אותם באופן משמעותי בדרך להשגת מצב ההארה. לשם כך משתמשים המתרגלים הבודהיסטיים במשך מאות שנים בכלים מדיטטיביים ובעבודה עם מצבי תודעה מעודנים. בין התרגולים האלה, תרגול מתקדם מאוד הוא תרגול הטוקדאם.
עבור מתרגל הטוקדאם המוות יכול להיות מסע מדיטטיבי שָלֵו. בתרגול הטוקדאם מתרגל מיומן שהגיע לסוף חייו, ממשיך במדיטציה גם אחרי שהוכרז מת קלינית. המדיטציה יכולה לארוך מספר ימים ועד מספר שבועות, ובה המתרגל המיומן מודט על מה שמכונה “תודעת האור הצלול של המוות", באמצעות תודעה מעודנת במיוחד.
תופעת הטוקדאם מסתורית מאוד בעיני המדענים, אך מוכרת היטב למתרגלים בודהיסטיים מיומנים.
התופעה משכה תשומת לב גדולה של מדענים שונים, ובשנים האחרונות צוותים של מדענים יחד עם מלומדים וּמתרגלים בודהיסטיים בכירים עובדים יחד על מחקר ותיעוד של תופעת הטוקדאם.
גֶשֶה סאנגפו יציג בפנינו את התפתחות שיתוף הפעולה שמפגיש מדענים ומתרגלים בודהיסטיים, ויתמקד בתרגול הטוקדאם. הוא ישתף אותנו כמה מקרים שבהם תועדו מתרגלי טוקדאם רבי־הישגים, יחלוק אתנו הסברים לגבי שלבי ההתמוססות של התודעה המתרחשים לפני המוות, ולגבי מה שקורה לתודעה במצב הטוקדאם. בנוסף, גשה-לה יציג כמה נקודות מחקר נוספות ומסקרנות אחרות מתוך שיתוף הפעולה הזה, כגון הקשרים האפשריים בין הפילוסופיה הבודהיסטית לפיזיקת הקוונטים.

גשה לודו סאנגפו
גשה לודו סאנגפו נולד בטיבט. הוא הגיע להודו ב-1992 והצטרף למנזר גנדן ג'אנגצה. אחרי שסיים כעשרים שנות לימודי בודהיזם במנזר, השיג את תואר גשה להארמפה בשנת 2018. הוא השלים גם שנת לימודי טנטרה במנזר גיוטו בשנת 2019. מעבר ללימודי הבודהיזם גשה לה נחשף ללימודי מדע. הוא למד באוניברסיטת אמורי שבארה"ב בשנים 2010-2013 והשלים שם את תוכנית לימודי המדע ETSI, ומאז הוא מלמד מדע לנזירים. גשה לה משמש כעת כמנהל מרכז המדע במנזר גנדן ג'אנגצה.
ב-2019 גשה לה מונה להיות המתאם של המנזרים שבאזור מונדגוד. ב-2024 הוא מונה כמנהל עמית של לימוד הטוקדאם. הוא גם שימש כחוקר בתוכנית חקר החלימה הצלולה ויוגת החלום
במסגרת מחקר של אוניברסיטת אמורי.

Tukdam, a journey to next life – an alternative approach to death

Most of us fear death, fear the unknown. Death is perceived by us as the ultimate end of our lives. However, according to Buddhism this is not the case at all.
Buddhism claim the existence of infinite lifetimes. We arrived at this life from previous life, and after this life we’ll continue to our next lifetime. Clinical death, as we know, is NOT the final departure, but it is just one of the stages of the death process.
This assumption leads the Buddhist practitioners to the understanding that they have to prepare for death and for what lies beyond death. Such an understanding gives them tools to improve their next rebirth and even to a greater advance towards enlightenment. For centuries Buddhist practitioners have been using meditative tools and subtle states of mind. Among these practices, the Tukdam practice is a mark of a very high-level practice.
For the Tukdam practitioner death can be a peaceful meditative journey. A highly accomplished practitioner who has reached the end of their live and is declared clinically dead, is remaining in meditation with a very subtle mind, for a few days to a few weeks, on what is called the Clear Light of Death.
The Tukdam phenomenon is mysterious to scientists but well known to highly accomplished Buddhist practitioners. This phenomenon attracted the attention of different scientists, and teams of scientists and accomplish Buddhist scholars and practitioners have been working together to research and document the Tukdam practice in the recent years.
Geshe Sangpo will speak about the evolution of the collaboration work, bringing together scientists and buddhist practitioners, focusing on the Tukdam practice. He will share with us accounts of highly accomplished Tukdam practitioners, about the stages of dissolution which occurs before death, and what happens to the consciousness along this process. In addition, Geshe la will also share with us some other interesting points of research such as the correlation between Buddhist philosophy and quantum physics.

Geshe Lodoe Sangpo 
Geshe Lodoe Sangpo was born in Tibet. He came to India in 1992 and enrolled in Gaden Jangtse Monastic University. After completing his monastic curriculum of Buddhist studies for nearly twenty years, he obtained the highest attainable educational degree of Geshe Lharamapa degree in 2018. He also completed one
year of Buddhist Tantric Studies at Gyutö Monastery in 2019. Beyond Buddhist studies, Geshe-la has had significant exposure to studies in several disciplines of science studies. He received the Tenzin Gyatso Scholarship to attend Emory University from 2010 to 2013 to complete the ETSI Science Studies Program, andsince then has taught monastic science since. Currently, Geshe-la is Director of the Science Center at Gaden Jangtse Monastic University.
In 2019, he was appointed as coordinator of the Mundgod region monasteries, including Drepung Gomang & Loseling and Gaden Jangtse & Shartse monasteries.
In 2024, he was appointed Associate Director of the Tukdam Study. He also serves as a researcher in the Lucid Dreaming & Dream Yoga Study as part of the Emory- Tibet Science Initiative Research Program.
